Then songs were too cool not to be played live and we decided to set up a show tribute to female fronted metal bands.Īt the very beginning there was me (Laura) on vocals, Bob and Max at lead and rhythm guitar, Sergio Heavy Mate on drums and Kill on the bass guitar. Our band was formed back in 2008, initially we would love to make an experiment and record some old school obscure stuff to be released under pseudonym and see how people would react. What originally prompted the formation of Sign Of The Jackal? How did you all come together and complete the band? If you don’t mind, I’d like to just briefly touch on your history as a band. Also included below is a recent video for “Beyond the Door” and a stream of ‘Breaking the Spell.” Enjoy it and pass it along! As it turns out, my hunch about their approach to making great music was pretty close but you’ll find out more about that from Laure directly.

Recently, Sign Of The Jackal’s lead vocalist, Laura Coller, answered some questions I had about the band, their music, the killer new record, and anything related to what they have going on at the moment, really. Just because they employ a stylistic approach popularized in the ’80s that’s been largely abandoned until now, doesn’t mean that there’s no creativity or unique individualism to be produced. This band knows what year it is, they know who they are as a band, they know what they want their sound to be, and they know what they want to do with it. Nor are there any other futile attempts at the pseudo-romanticism of pretending like they come from a bygone era. I love that there’s nothing about this band that alludes to any desire to marry any kind of ‘old’ style with a modern approach. Certainly the band’s creative energy, but there’s something about the general constructs of their ‘sound’–the riffs, rhythms, tempos, vocals, the usual suspects–that generates an energy inside of their music that drew me in almost immediately.

For me, there’s one thing it all comes down to, on ‘Breaking the Spell’ in particular the energy. Like all good music does, it prompted me to backtrack through the band’s catalog, which is highly recommended, btw. This was a situation where I wound up feeling shitty about having not been familiar with Sign Of The Jackal prior to this album. It was quiet for almost five years, until June of 2018 when they announced the release of their follow-up LP, ‘Breaking the Spell’. Their first EP, ‘The Beyond’, came out in 2011 and was followed by their debut LP in 2013, called ‘Mark of the Beast’.
